GENERAL YAHYA KHAN

“Fellow countrymen, I wish to make it absolutely clear to you that I have no ambition other than the creation of conditions conducive to the establishment of constitutional government. The Armed Forces belong to the people. They have no political ambitions, and will not prop up any individual or party. At the same time, I wish to make it equally clear that we have every intention of completing the mission that we've embarked upon the nation’s satisfaction”

“We are passing through the most fateful period of our history. The recent events have dealt a serious blow to our nation prestige and progress. The Material Law Administration cannot and will not tolerate imitational and destructive activities of any kind”.

“This is a drastic and extreme step when with great reluctance, but with fullest conviction that there was no alternative to is except the disintegration and complete ruination of the country. History would never have forgiven us if the present chaotic conditions were allowed to go on any further. Let me announce in no uncertain terms that our ultimate aim is to restore democracy. But of the type that people can understand and work. When the time comes, your opinion will be freely asked. But when that will be, events alone can tell”

He concluded by saying a word for the “disruptionists, Political opportunists, smugglers, black marketers and others….

“The soldiers and the peoples are sick of the sight of you, so it will be good for your health to turn a new leaf and begin to behave. Otherwise, retribution will be swift and sure”

Helen Steiner Rice - How to Best Serve Him

Here I am engulfed in one of the “darkest hours” of my life We have often discussed these “darkest hours of soul searching” and they come as nothing strange or unexpected, for we know this is the way of life. But somehow, as we grow older they do increase in intensity.

But I know GOD is behind the “dark cloud” and I know he will remove the “darkness”, I also knew this is not a destructive experience but the constructive one and that he is trying to awake me to new awareness of how to best serve him.

Excerpts from a public speech before becoming President on December 27, 1960

I think the American people expecting more from us than the cries of indignation and attack. The times are too grave, the challenges too urgent, and the stakes too high, to permit the customary passions of political debate. We are not here to curse the darkness, but to light the candle that can guide us through that darkness to a safe and sane future.

As Winston Churchill said on taking office some twenty years ago, if we open a quarrel between the present and the past, we shall be in danger of losing the future.

Today our concern must be with that future. For the world is changing. The old era is ending. The old ways will not do.

Abroad, the balance of power is shifting. There are new and more terrible weapons – new and uncertain nations – new pressures of population and deprivation. One third of the world, it has been said, may be free – but one third is victim of cruel repression – and the other one third is rocket by pangs of poverty, hunger and envy. More energy is released by the awakening of these new nations then the fission of the atom itself.

Meanwhile, communities influence has penetrated further in to Asia, stood astride the MIDDLE EAST and now festers some ninety miles of the coast of Florida. Friends have slipped into neutrality – and neutrals into hostility. As our keynoters reminded us, The President who began career by going to Korea ends it by staying away from Japan.

The World has been close to war before – but now man, who has survived all previous threats to his existence, has taken into his mortal hands the power to exterminate the entire species some seven times over.

As we face the coming challenges, we too, shall wait upon the Lord, and ask that He renew our strength. Then shall we be the equal to the test. Then we shall not be weary. And then we shall prevail.
